Gloria!<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>4 Of her, Emmanuel, the Christ was born<br \/>In Bethlehem, all on a Christmas morn<br \/>And Christian folk throughout the world will ever say:<br \/>&#8220;Most highly favoured lady,&#8221; Gloria!<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/><strong>Prayers of Approach, Confession and Forgiveness<\/strong><br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>Lord,<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>We come together for prayer, praise and worship today,<br \/>Away from the growing crescendo of the world at this time of advent<br \/>Away from the sparkling lights and festive celebrations<br \/>To the peace and fellowship we find when we come together to praise you.<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>Lord, bring us back to the time of your son\u2019s arrival,&nbsp;<br \/>Away from the expectations of our world today,<br \/>Forgive us when we forget the message you delivered during the birth of Christ Jesus<br \/>Still our minds and bring our hearts back to your word.<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>Grant us understanding when we hear about the annunciation,&nbsp;<br \/>Place us in Mary\u2019s shoes and allow the comprehension of her situation,<br \/>There may have been times when we have judged or gossiped about others<br \/>Forgive our pettiness and grant us compassion and empathy.<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>There are times when we have doubt and anger against those we love, we want to run away from it all,<br \/>From the harsh words of others, from the misunderstanding stares.<br \/>Give us the strength and understanding to be there for each other<br \/>Even in our darkest of times, allow us the gracious understanding of Joseph.<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>Forgive the sharp words we use, the preconceived notions we attached,<br \/>Before we have even taken the time to listen or understand others.<br \/>Help us to be more like Elizabeth, joyous and happy with the great news from Mary,<br \/>Give us the grace to see the good in others, to share in their happiness and their sorrow.<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>At times we are swift to judge and slow to act.<br \/>Leaving things that we could do today till tomorrow.<br \/>Like Matthew, help us Lord, to change our ways today, rather than talking, preaching and praying,&nbsp;<br \/>we should show our compassion in our interactions with all those we meet in the world from today onwards.<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>Lead us Lord in the way of your son, as we join together now in the words he taught us, saying:<br \/><strong>Our Father, Who art in heaven\u2026\u2026<\/strong><br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>Amen<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/><strong>Prayer of Illumination<\/strong><br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>God,&nbsp;<br \/>We come today with our head and hearts open to your words and wisdom<br \/>Allow us to hear your voice and understand the message you are giving<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>Amen&nbsp;<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/><strong>St Luke 1: 26-38<\/strong><br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin\u2019s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, \u2018Greetings, favoured one! The Lord is with you.\u2019&nbsp; But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, \u2018Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God.&nbsp; And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus.&nbsp; He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.\u2019&nbsp; Mary said to the angel, \u2018How can this be, since I am a virgin?\u2019&nbsp; The angel said to her, \u2018The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.\u2019 Then Mary said, \u2018Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.\u2019 Then the angel departed from her.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>Meditation of Mary<\/strong><br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>Why me?<br \/>That\u2019s what I kept on asking myself.<br \/>Why me?<br \/>I mean, it was obvious what people were going to say, wasn\u2019t it?<br \/>The sly looks,<br \/>the knowing grins,<br \/>the wagging tongues.<br \/>And Joseph?<br \/>Well, he really hit the roof.<br \/>Furious he was, and who can blame him?<br \/>If we\u2019d been married it would have been different,<br \/>but engaged \u2013 it was bound to cause a scandal.<br \/>And it hurt, more than anyone will know;<br \/>I never realised people could be so cruel.<br \/>I didn\u2019t even want a baby, that\u2019s what made it worse;<br \/>it was the last thing on my mind.<br \/>I was still young,<br \/>not ready for that kind of responsibility,<br \/>wanting to enjoy life a little.<br \/>I could have done without those sleepless nights,<br \/>the endless washing,<br \/>the countless extra demands.<br \/>And believe me, it didn\u2019t get any easier.<br \/>Well, it never does, does it?<br \/>I\u2019ll never forget how he disappeared like that<br \/>on the way back from Jerusalem \u2013<br \/>a right old panic he had us in.<br \/>But was he sorry?<br \/>Well, if he was he had a funny way of showing it.<br \/>\u2018You should have known where to find me,\u2019 he said \u2013<br \/>\u2018My Father\u2019s house, where else?\u2019<br \/>Cheeky monkey!<br \/>And then, just when life was plodding along nicely,<br \/>back on an even keel,<br \/>he went swanning off into the wilderness to be baptised.<br \/>Oh, I know he had to make his own way, don\u2019t get me wrong,<br \/>but I couldn\u2019t help feeling<br \/>he was getting mixed up in something dangerous.<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>And so it proved.<br \/>we could all see it coming,<br \/>all except him apparently.<br \/>He said the wrong things<br \/>to the wrong people<br \/>in the wrong places,<br \/>and there could only be one result.<br \/>It nearly broke my heart to watch it \u2013<br \/>my beautiful boy, broken and bleeding,<br \/>struggling with that cross,<br \/>hanging in agony.<br \/>But then he looked down,<br \/>not at the rest of them<br \/>but at me.<br \/>And in his eyes was such love,<br \/>such care,<br \/>such tenderness!<br \/>I saw suddenly the eyes of God looking at me<br \/>through the eyes of my child,<br \/>and I asked myself then,<br \/>as I\u2019d asked so many times before,<br \/>yet differently this time,<br \/>so very differently:<br \/>Why me?<br \/>Why <em>me?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hymn&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong><em>Meekness and Majesty&nbsp;<\/em><br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Graham Kendrick<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>Meekness and majesty, manhood and deity<br \/>in perfect harmony the Man who is God;<br \/>Lord of eternity dwells in humanity<br \/>kneels in humility and washes our feet.<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/><em>O what a mystery, meekness and majesty.<\/em><br \/><em>Bow down and worship for this is your God.<\/em><br \/><em>This is your God<\/em><br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>2: Father&#8217;s pure radiance perfect in innocence<br \/>yet learns obedience to death on a cross.<br \/>Suffering to give us life conquering through sacrifice<br \/>and as they crucify&nbsp; prays \u201cFather forgive.\u201d<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>3: Wisdom unsearchable, God the invisible;<br \/>love indestructible in frailty appears.<br \/>Lord of infinity, stooping so tenderly,<br \/>lifts our humanity to the heights of His throne.<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/><strong>St Matthew 1: 18-19<\/strong><br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly.<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/><strong>The Meditation of Joseph.<\/strong><br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>I didn\u2019t know what to think,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Not when she first told me \u2013<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; My sweet, innocent Mary, pregnant!<br \/>I suppose I should\u2019ve been angry,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; And I was later,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Extremely!<br \/>But that wasn\u2019t my first reaction;<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; It was shock, more like,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Disbelief,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; An inability to take it in.<br \/>You see, I couldn\u2019t just see her playing around,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; deceiving me behind my back \u2013&nbsp;<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; not Mary.<br \/>Other girls perhaps,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; But she wasn\u2019t like them;<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; I\u2019d have trusted her with my life if necessary.<br \/>So when she started chattering on about this angel,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; About being with child by the Holy Spirit,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Do you know what,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; I listened!<br \/>No, honestly, I did!<br \/>Maybe that sounds daft,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; But I couldn\u2019t just believe she was making it all up,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Inventing an excuse to get her off the hook.<br \/>And, let\u2019s face it, if it were an excuse it was a pretty lame one;<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; I mean, when\u2019s the last time you saw an angel?<br \/>Precisely.<br \/>But if I took it calmly at first,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; It wasn\u2019t long before the doubts set in,<br \/>the questions that couldn\u2019t be answered,<br \/>the niggling voices that wouldn\u2019t go away.<br \/>And in no time suspicion had grown into something worse \u2013&nbsp;<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Resentment,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Bitterness,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Condemnation.<br \/>I\u2019d have called off the engagement,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; there\u2019s no doubt about that;<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; much as I liked the girl,<br \/>there was simply no way a man in my position<br \/>could countenance going through with it,<br \/>not if I wanted to keep any semblance of respectability.<br \/>She was tarnished, according to law anyway,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; her purity soiled;<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; and if I took no notice<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; the village gossips would soon put their heads together<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; and decide I had done the tarnishing \u2013&nbsp;<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; too impatient to wait until the goods had been paid for.<br \/>So that was it.<br \/>My mind was made up.<br \/>It was just a question of finding the right words at the right time,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Breaking it as gently as I could.<br \/>Only then I had a dream,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; almost a vision you might say it was, looking back,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; so powerfully did it speak to me.<br \/>Suddenly it was me seeing angels, not Mary,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; it was me hearing the voice of God instead of her;<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; and it was the same message,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; the same story \u2013&nbsp;<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; the child she carried,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; born of God,<br \/>his gift to humankind,<br \/>the one who would redeem his people.<br \/>Did I believe it?<br \/>Well, I suppose I must have done, in a way.<br \/>I married her after all,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; despite the snide remarks,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; the wagging tongues.<br \/>Maybe, of course, I wanted to marry her anyway,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; or just didn\u2019t want to hurt her.<br \/>Maybe I simply liked the thought of being a dad,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; and wanted to believe that story of hers,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; incredible though it seemed.<br \/>To be truthful<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; there were probably all kinds of reasons behind my decision;<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; yet perhaps it\u2019s through such things as those,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; our everyday thoughts and feelings,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; just as much through dreams and visions,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; that God chooses to speak to us.<br \/>Perhaps through these most of all.<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/><strong>Hymn&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong><em>Earth Was Waiting, Spent and Restless<\/em><br \/>Walter C. Smith 1824 &#8211; 1908<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p><span>Earth was waiting, spent and restless,<br \/>with a mingled hope and fear,<br \/>faithful men and women praying,<br \/>&#8216;Surely, Lord, the day is near:<br \/>the Desire of all the nations \u2014<br \/>it is time he should appear!&#8217;<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>2 Then the Spirit of the Highest<br \/>to a virgin meek came down,<br \/>and he burdened her with blessing,<br \/>and he pained her with renown;<br \/>for she bore the Lord&#8217;s anointed<br \/>for his cross and for his crown.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p><span>3 Earth has groaned and laboured for him<br \/>since the ages first began,<br \/>for in him was hid the secret<br \/>which through all the ages ran \u2014<br \/>Son of Mary, Son of David,<br \/>Son of God, and Son of Man.<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/><strong>St Luke 1: 39-43<\/strong><br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country,&nbsp; where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.&nbsp; When Elizabeth heard Mary\u2019s greeting, the child leapt in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit&nbsp; and exclaimed with a loud cry, \u2018Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me?<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/><strong>Meditation of Elizabeth&nbsp;<\/strong><br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>My baby jumped for joy, I swear it!<br \/>Oh I know you often feel them kicking,<br \/>and you may well say it was only shuffling about in the womb,<br \/>but this was different, I&#8217;m positive.<br \/>It was the first time I\u2019d ever felt it move for a start,<br \/>a wild lurch as Mary approached,<br \/>almost as if it knew even then<br \/>she was carrying the child who would shape its life.<br \/>Yes, I know that sounds ridiculous,<br \/>and I wouldn&#8217;t have given it another thought myself \u2013<br \/>I&#8217;m not usually given to romanticising.<br \/>But you see, when I saw Mary coming,<br \/>I knew something special had happened,<br \/>something quite out of the ordinary.<br \/>I realised she was pregnant for one thing,<br \/>but then we women do spot those things, don&#8217;t we?<br \/>Not that it was showing yet, mind you,<br \/>but it was there in her eyes,<br \/>in her expression,<br \/>in the spring in her step,<br \/>just as it had been in mine a few months earlier.<br \/>I knew,<br \/>and I ran to embrace her,<br \/>sharing her joy.<br \/>Yet there was more to it than that,<br \/>I could feel it in my bones even before she began to speak.<br \/>I could sense that her child would be different,<br \/>not just from mine but from every child,<br \/>born to set us free,<br \/>the fulfilment of our hopes,<br \/>the answer to our prayers.<br \/>You think that&#8217;s over the top?<br \/>Well, I may have over-reacted, I accept that,<br \/>let my imagination rim away with me.<br \/>I&#8217;d been a bit on edge, it&#8217;s true,<br \/>ever since that queer business with Zechariah \u2013<br \/>that day before I conceived when he came back from the temple, eyes staring,<br \/>shaking his head in disbelief,<br \/>unable to say a word until after John was born.<br \/>It got me down, I don&#8217;t mind admitting it,<br \/>and yes, perhaps I was a little overwrought,<br \/>perhaps just plain excited.<br \/>But I still say it,<br \/>despite what anyone may think \u2014<br \/>my child leaped in my womb,<br \/>positively jumped for joy!<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/><strong>Hymn<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <em>Hark the Glad Sound the Saviour Comes<\/em><br \/>Philip Doddridge, 1735<br \/>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Hark, the glad sound! When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, \u2018Woman, here is your son.\u2019 Then he said to the disciple, \u2018Here is your mother.\u2019 And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/><strong>19 Meditation of Matthew<\/strong><br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>He would come again,<br \/>that as he had departed so he would return.<br \/>And we believed him,<br \/>totally,<br \/>without reserve or hesitation.<br \/>It was what kept us going, that promise,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; the one thing that gave us strength to battle on through thick and thin.<br \/>Yet sometimes,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; just occasionally,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; I catch myself wondering whether we should look forward;<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; whether it will all be so cosy,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; so comfortable,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; as we sometimes seem to imagine.<br \/>You see, I can\u2019t help remembering those words of his,<br \/>about the sheep and the goats,<br \/>about the final judgement &#8211;&nbsp;<br \/>so simple,<br \/>so straightforward,<br \/>yet so chilling in their implications:<br \/>\u201cI was hungry, and you fed me,<br \/>thirsty, and you gave me a drink,<br \/>a stranger and you welcomed me,<br \/>naked, sick, imprisoned, and you were there to help.\u201d<br \/>That\u2019s what he said &#8211;<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; through serving these,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; even the very least of them,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; you serve me.<br \/>It sounds good, doesn\u2019t it?<br \/>The sort of message we like to hear.<br \/>Yet sometimes those words disturb me,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; for I can\u2019t help asking, \u201cWhich am I?\u201d<br \/>Oh, I know which I\u2019d like to be, stands to reason!<br \/>And I know which I should be, all too well.<br \/>But if I\u2019m honest,<br \/>really truthful with myself,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; I fear I\u2019m more often a goat than a sheep.<br \/>I saw the plight of the hungry,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; but it was me I worried about feeding.<br \/>I heard the cry of the thirsty,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; but it was my own need I satisfied.<br \/>I spotted the loneliness of the stranger,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; but wasn\u2019t sure I could trust them.<br \/>I was told about the naked,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; but it was I who got the new clothes.<br \/>I glimpsed the despair of the sick,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; but was afraid to risk infection.<br \/>I knew some were denied their freedom,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; but was reluctant to get involved.<br \/>Not now I told them;<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; next time I\u2019ll do something,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; next time I\u2019ll help &#8211;&nbsp;<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; God will understand.<br \/>But will he, that\u2019s the question?<br \/>I\u2019ve been good at talking,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; good at preaching,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; good at praying,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; and in faithfulness at worship I have few peers.<br \/>Yet when I recall those words of Jesus<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; and measure them against his life,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; sometimes I find myself almost hoping he doesn\u2019t come back,<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
