Wednesday 16th June<\/strong>  <\/p>\n

Revelation 18<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

After this I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority; and the earth was made bright with his splendour.  He called out with a mighty voice,<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great!<\/span>
    It has become a dwelling-place of demons,<\/span>
a haunt of every foul spirit,<\/span>
    a haunt of every foul bird,<\/span>
    a haunt of every foul and hateful beast.<\/span>
For all the nations have drunk<\/span>
    of the wine of the wrath of her fornication,<\/span>
and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her,<\/span>
    and the merchants of the earth have grown rich from the power of her luxury.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

Then I heard another voice from heaven saying,<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Come out of her, my people,<\/span>
    so that you do not take part in her sins,<\/span>
and so that you do not share in her plagues;<\/span>
for her sins are heaped high as heaven,<\/span>
    and God has remembered her iniquities.<\/span>
Render to her as she herself has rendered,<\/span>
    and repay her double for her deeds;<\/span>
    mix a double draught for her in the cup she mixed.<\/span>
As she glorified herself and lived luxuriously,<\/span>
    so give her a like measure of torment and grief.<\/span>
Since in her heart she says,<\/span>
    \u201cI rule as a queen;<\/span>
I am no widow,<\/span>
    and I will never see grief\u201d,<\/span>
therefore her plagues will come in a single day\u2014<\/span>
    pestilence and mourning and famine\u2014<\/span>
and she will be burned with fire;<\/span>
    for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

And the kings of the earth, who committed fornication and lived in luxury with her, will weep and wail over her when they see the smoke of her burning;  they will stand far off, in fear of her torment, and say,<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Alas, alas, the great city,<\/span>
    Babylon, the mighty city!<\/span>
For in one hour your judgement has come.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

 And the merchants of the earth weep and mourn for her, since no one buys their cargo any more,  cargo of gold, silver, jewels and pearls, fine linen, purple, silk and scarlet, all kinds of scented wood, all articles of ivory, all articles of costly wood, bronze, iron, and marble,  cinnamon, spice, incense, myrrh, frankincense, wine, olive oil, choice flour and wheat, cattle and sheep, horses and chariots, slaves\u2014and human lives.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018The fruit for which your soul longed<\/span>
    has gone from you,<\/span>
and all your dainties and your splendour<\/span>
    are lost to you,<\/span>
    never to be found again!\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

The merchants of these wares, who gained wealth from her, will stand far off, in fear of her torment, weeping and mourning aloud,<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Alas, alas, the great city,<\/span>
    clothed in fine linen,<\/span>
        in purple and scarlet,<\/span>
    adorned with gold,<\/span>
        with jewels, and with pearls!<\/span>
For in one hour all this wealth has been laid waste!\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

And all shipmasters and seafarers, sailors and all whose trade is on the sea, stood far off  and cried out as they saw the smoke of her burning,<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018What city was like the great city?\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

And they threw dust on their heads, as they wept and mourned, crying out,<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Alas, alas, the great city,<\/span>
    where all who had ships at sea<\/span>
    grew rich by her wealth!<\/span>
For in one hour she has been laid waste.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

Rejoice over her, O heaven, you saints and apostles and prophets! For God has given judgement for you against her.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying,<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018With such violence Babylon the great city<\/span>
    will be thrown down,<\/span>
    and will be found no more;<\/span>
and the sound of harpists and minstrels and of flautists and trumpeters<\/span>
    will be heard in you no more;<\/span>
and an artisan of any trade<\/span>
    will be found in you no more;<\/span>
and the sound of the millstone<\/span>
    will be heard in you no more;<\/span>
and the light of a lamp<\/span>
    will shine in you no more;<\/span>
and the voice of bridegroom and bride<\/span>
    will be heard in you no more;<\/span>
for your merchants were the magnates of the earth,<\/span>
    and all nations were deceived by your sorcery.<\/span>
And in you was found the blood of prophets and of saints,<\/span>
    and of all who have been slaughtered on earth.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

Reflection<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Prophecy shows what is to come and urges us to act as if the prophecy has already come true.  In the midst of empire the Seer is told that it had already fallen and was instructed to call God\u2019s people out – just as Moses had called the Jews out of slavery.  This deeply subversive passage would have both terrified and excited its first hearers. How does one live in the midst of an empire as if it had already fallen?<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course the Church struggled with this dilemma.  Instead of resistance it took on imperial trappings:  early pacifism gave way to pragmatism,  separation gave way to inclusion, bishops united their ministry of service with becoming imperial functionaries. Even now some traditions refer to bishops\u2019 \u201cthrones\u201d; it\u2019s not so long ago that popes wore a triple crown.  <\/span><\/p>\n

Yet how do we live with empire now?  As we explored yesterday the legacies of Britain\u2019s imperial past are still with us.  America and China function as if they were imperial powers, financial systems still colonise and oppress.  Do we resist or collude?  Of course it\u2019s hard, we feel powerless, we don\u2019t know what to do but then nor did the Seer who had to write Revelation.  In telling our stories of freedom and liberation we learn to be free.  In rejoicing at empire\u2019s end we help overthrow it.  In seeing the world as it really is we help change it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prayer<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Blow the trumpets on Mt Zion!<\/span>
Christ shall come a second time<\/span>
ruling with a rod of iron<\/span>
all who now as foes combine.<\/span>
Fables\u2019 garment sweet rejected<\/span>
and our fellowship is o’er.<\/span>
Babylon is fallen is fallen is fallen,<\/span>
Babylon is fallen to rise no more!<\/span><\/p>\n

Help us to live, O God,<\/span>
as if empire had fallen,<\/span>
as if we were free,<\/span>
that we might free your people.<\/span>
