{"id":23022,"date":"2025-01-20T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-01-20T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/urc\/urc-daily-devotion-20-january-2025"},"modified":"2025-01-20T06:00:00","modified_gmt":"2025-01-20T06:00:00","slug":"urc-daily-devotion-monday-20-january-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.trinitywimbledon.org\/index.php\/urc-daily-devotion-monday-20-january-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"URC Daily Devotion Monday 20 January 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong id=\"docs-internal-guid-d9ceb7f1-7fff-6e76-aae0-5fb098af4903\">St Luke 9: 49 &#8211; 50<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>John answered, \u2018Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not follow with us.\u2019&nbsp; But Jesus said to him, \u2018Do not stop him; for whoever is not against you is for you.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong id=\"docs-internal-guid-d9ceb7f1-7fff-6e76-aae0-5fb098af4903\">Reflection<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>What a short, punchy reading today: words of Jesus advocating the virtues of generosity and an open-mind.&nbsp; It\u2019s acceptable for those regarded as \u2018other\u2019 to call upon his name.&nbsp; If they can restore health and balance to distressed people then leave them be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>What a rallying cry for inclusivity.&nbsp; There should be no more \u2018us\u2019 and \u2018them\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>How well I remember the first lunchtime on my first day ever at the Scottish Episcopal Institute (where I undertook some of my training for URC ministry alongside the Scottish College).&nbsp; I\u2019d dared to suggest that denominations might be an affront to Jesus.&nbsp; Surely we were all \u2018humble learners in the school of Christ.\u2019(1)<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>To feel comfortable in diverse worship situations is a sure way to arouse suspicion.&nbsp; \u201cYou\u2019re denominationally unstable!\u201d, exclaimed the tutor.&nbsp; Other people have said \u201cYou\u2019re like someone with odd socks on. How can you readily take part in Anglican worship*?\u201d (*alongside URC services and, earlier, Quaker meetings).<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>I\u2019m all for odd socks.&nbsp; I also think it\u2019s better to be \u2018out\u2019 than \u2018in\u2019 if conformity means betraying one\u2019s core values and hard-earned life experience.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Our faith journeys are not necessarily linear.&nbsp; We learn and change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>And yet\u2026. Many churches, including the URC, exercise great care in selecting and educating ministers, whether lay preachers, community workers or ministers of some other kind.&nbsp; There is a healthy tension between our dissenting tradition (\u2018all may be led by the Spirit\u2026\u2019 ) and well founded guidelines, rules some find smacking of control freakery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Without a pastoral heart and selfless desire to serve, worship leaders and healers could do harm as well as good.&nbsp; They may have broken away from another group, never saying their farewells with gratitude.&nbsp; They may carry grudges and discontent.&nbsp; We must exercise great discernment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>One rule of thumb is to ask, is this one, claiming to act in the name of Jesus, able to listen deeply as well as to speak?<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong id=\"docs-internal-guid-d9ceb7f1-7fff-6e76-aae0-5fb098af4903\">Prayer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>A wise old bird sat in an oak,<br \/>the more he saw the less he spoke.<br \/>The more he spoke the less he heard.<br \/>Why can\u2019t we all be like that wise old bird?<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Jesus, give us wisdom whenever we minister.&nbsp;<br \/>May our discernment also be shrewd and prayerful.&nbsp;<br \/>Teach us when to say \u2018no\u2019 as well as saying \u2018yes\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>&nbsp;(1) &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Edgar G.
