Climate change march

On Sunday 29 November, a huge Climate March will be taking place in London.  This is the eve of the crucial climate talks which will be taking place in Paris from 30 November to 12 December. The Paris conference, aims to get all countries to sign a new international agreement to aim to keep global warming below 2°.

It is essential that countries find a way to not exceed this increase in temperature, as we know that if we do there is no going back. Climate change will affect everyone and is already affecting many of the world’s poorest, as well creating job insecurity in developed countries such as the UK. The Climate March, is a national demonstration for climate, justice and jobs.

Ahead of the March, Commitment for Life is working together with a number of other organisations, including Christian Aid, Islamic Relief and World Jewish Relief, to bring together people of faith from all over the UK for an interfaith moment before joining the March. This will be a time to reflect on our faiths’ teachings about climate change and the need to protect our planet.  It will explore scripture and prayers from a number of traditions as well as hearing testimony from those affected by climate change. This will take place from 11:45 at Westminster Synagogue, Knightsbridge, after which we will then walk to join the March.

We at Commitment for Life hope that you will join us and all our partners at this event on 29 November.  If you would like any further information about the event please see the websites shown below or email Amelia Sutcliffe at asutcliffe@christian-aid.org

Advent lecture

On Saturday 7 November, Junior Church and Pilots held their annual fireworks party.  Forty children and adults enjoyed parachute games, hot dogs and mini rolls before heading upstairs to watch Steve and Guy put on an excellent fireworks show.

Olivia said, ‘They were quite loud but I enjoyed the fireworks, especially the rockets’, while Tim said, ‘The fireworks were very good and there were lots of them. I also had five sausages.’

Thanks to everyone who helped make it a success, from lighting the fireworks to cooking the hot dogs.

During half term we ran our Autumn holiday club. This year’s theme was ‘Polar Explorers’ and we explored the lives of five New Testament figures: Philip, Stephen, Paul, Timothy and Andrew. Our craft activities saw us make Philip in a chariot, woven compasses, a (almost) life-size Polar explorer (complete with furry hood) and a Timothy comic strip. We played ‘ten pin ‘poling’, island relay, ‘what’s in the back-pack’ and sleeping bag relay.

Each day we also had a competition to see who was the quickest to put on all the Polar explorer clothes, and this was the children’s favourite activity, with Kate the overall winner. Music (and inflatable microphones and guitars) was provided by Andrew, and the ten children who took part had a wonderful time.

We’ll be running our next holiday club at Easter. Thanks to Gillian and Hannah who organised the club and all the helpers who ran games, crafts, provided resources and made refreshments.

Merton-Night-ShelterTrinity will again be participating in this winter’s Night Shelter project when 14 faith-based organisations will open their doors to provide overnight accommodation for 12-15 homeless people. Trinity will be providing an evening meal, accommodation and breakfast on seven Sunday evenings/Monday mornings from Sunday 31 January to 13 March. Those involved in the past have already been asked their availability but we would very much welcome new volunteers.

Two training sessions take place on Thursday 12 November at 7 pm and on Sunday 22 November at 3.00 pm, both to be held at the YMCA in The Broadway, Wimbledon. These are very helpful for those without experience but are not essential to participate.

Please do let any of us now if you are interested, and especially if you would like to attend one of the training sessions, so we can alert the organisers.  Contact Robin, Barry or Ralph by emailing the church office at office@trinitywimbledon.org.
